El Jardín del Mar

El Jardín del Mar is a new seafood restaurant in Madrid whose mantra is: “Your 365 days of beach in Madrid,” and it’s no exaggeration. Just step through the door and you’ll discover a universe of coral and seabeds, sun and salt, and intense flavors.
When we were commissioned to design the costumes, we imagined the team as the crew of a ship, and a whole host of ideas came together: sailors, seamen, ship’s boys, and officers; Picasso’s stripes; the bohemian air of 1920s Paris; Gaultier, sophisticated and sexy.
Order had to be restored. I decided to separate them by rank. This is essential in the Navy, and also extremely necessary in a restaurant so that customers can clearly distinguish who is who.
For managers and hostesses, I designed a tailored jacket for winter inspired by the navy, with a sailor collar and sand-colored braid trim and gold buttons.
For summer, a looser-fitting blazer-style jacket with short sleeves and a straight cut for a fresher, more summery look.

An army of ship’s boys dressed in the color of the sea.

Sailor stripes screen-printed on a sand-colored T-shirt made from wonderful 100% organic cotton.

Gold sailor buttons sewn onto the shoulders and a black scarf tied around the neck complete the look, giving it a very chic feel.

A nod to the roguish charm of sailors is the raspa (the restaurant’s logo) screen-printed on the sleeve of the T-shirt, as if it were a tattoo.
